Promoting Financial Literacy Among our Youth
Young Americans Center for Financial Education – Denver, Colorado
Since 1987, the Young Americans Center for Financial Education has taught over 400,000 young people 21 and under, about finance, economics and business. Yet, in a 2006 national survey conducted by Jump$tart Coalition, 62 percent of nearly 6,000 high school seniors failed a multiple choice test on basic financial knowledge. That’s why Young Americans is partnering with First Data to develop a curriculum that teaches responsible use of debit and credit cards. With a donation of 30,000 plastic cards from CPI Card Group and a lesson plan designed by professional educators, over 28,000 children annually, in 334 schools in 44 Colorado school districts, will learn to be wise consumers using the payment technology of tomorrow today.
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands – Omaha, Nebraska
In an effort to spark interest and promote an understanding among young people about financial markets, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands offers “The Stock Market Challenge,” an electronic ride through the ticker tape of the stock exchange floor for kids. The event is a fundraiser that doubles as an educational tool for students, who gain insight into the fluctuations of the market.
“We are grateful that First Data’s commitment to financial literacy among our youth extends beyond the classroom and onto our simulated trading floor. As a founding sponsor, First Data understands that knowledge about how our economy functions is vital for a student’s long-term success in life.”
– Laura Schabloske, Chief Development Officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands

Providing Innovative Payment Solutions for Non-Profits
The Children’s Hospital – Denver, Colorado
The Children’s Hospital Foundation raises millions of dollars, among its many generous supporters, every year to help The Children’s Hospital provide first-rate care for kids. In 2009, First Data is providing fee-free credit card acceptance, an online donation gateway and wireless credit card terminals, all of which will save the Foundation close to $100,000 in donation processing fees. This savings means more donations can be applied directly to helping kids get better, faster.
“We are a hospital that treats kids using the best medicine and technology available. First Data’s donation and payment solutions allow us to be just as efficient and innovative in the realm of fundraising.”
– Jim Shmerling, DHA, FACHE, President and CEO of The Children’s Hospital
