First Data Wins Award for Best Merger and Acquisition

LONDON (June 19, 2009)First Data, a global leader in electronic commerce and payment processing services, has won an award for Best Merger and Acquisition, in recognition of Trionis, the interbank processing business jointly owned by First Data and 15 former EUFISERV shareholders. The award was presented to First Data at the Cards and Payments Europe 2009 gala dinner, which took place in Prague last night.

First Data and the 15 former shareholders of EUFISERV launched Trionis in September 2008 to provide interbank payment card switching services throughout the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and beyond. The Brussels-based business brings together networks operated by First Data and EUFISERV which, once fully integrated, will give customers the opportunity to access more than 74,000 ATMs, 1.5 million point-of-sale merchants and to reach more than 165 million debit and credit card accounts in Europe. Trionis presents a unique service offering in the issuer-to-acquirer space, providing financial institutions and retailers across Europe greater influence on how they route their payments.

Paul Stanley, senior vice president and general manager of Integrated Networks for First Data, who accepted the award on First Data’s behalf, said, “In Trionis, we have succeeded in leveraging networks and relationships to respond quickly to the changing payments landscape and create a business providing increased choice and efficiency to customers. This award is tremendous recognition for our new venture and acknowledges First Data’s commitment to supporting the vision of a single European payments market.

First Data was selected from a shortlist which included MasterCard and Barclaycard. Cards and Payments Europe 2009 is an annual conference, expo and awards dinner organised by Cards International and Electronic Payments International and is now in its 22nd year.
